The original song is "You're Beautiful," by James Blunt. If you took those final six seconds of "Rain King," (the part after the song ends, and Duritz just wails, effectively undermining an otherwise-wonderful song) and extended them out into an entire song, you'd have something only a tenth as annoying and whiny as the Blunt song.
We do not, in fact, have that book. But do we *have* to get it? Can you pick it up from PaperbackSwap and save our Amazon.com credit for something not boring?
The only reason I know the original song is that a friend of mine was deserpately trying to find a way to download it a few months ago. I don't listen to the radio so otherwise I would never know about it. I actually kind of like the song. It's grown on me.
This Weird Al song feels..well...unnecessarily harsh. It's not really funny to me, just cruel. I'm sure it's just me though.
It doesn't strike me more vicious than some of his other songs, per se (see "One More Minute," for example), but I don't think it's his best work. I suspect that has something to do with why they've released it for free.
I've never heard the original but I guessed that the chorus was probably "You're beautiful" - and thanks so much for pointing this out! I love me some Weird Al. :)

And she's not boring, dammit!
*long-suffering sigh*
She's okay. I'm not going to mock you for wanting the book. But with all of that stuff from authors we're both major fans of coming out soon...

Date: 2006-06-09 05:08 pm (UTC)I'm not surprised -- a song like Blunt's was born to be added to bank and retail muzak playlists.
