1. As a Jets fan, I would like to petition the NFL to officially end the season now. Right fucking now. Because if it ends today, we're in first place, with the leaders in passing and receiving yards. And I am not deluded enough to think that'll be the case for long.

2. That said, I'm still really, really happy with the job Pennington did. And with the team as a whole, excluding a certain field goal "kicker."

3. Although I certainly don't wish to see someone like Trent Green hurt in the process, Herm Edwards losing his debut game with the Chiefs after the shennanegans he and Peterson pulled in the off-season? Priceless.

4. Manning vs Manning was fun. Both kids are damned talented.

5. Now if the Vikings can pull off the Monday Night win, I'll be damned happy with the week (I'm indifferent when it comes to the Vikings, but I hate the 'skins as much as I hate any team that's not named the Miami Dolphins).

As a Bears fan, I stand behind your petition completely.

This will probably amuse you: here in Sunny Omaha we got the Chiefs-Bengals game, and when that was mercifully over they switched to the Jets-Titans game...right up to around the point where the Titans were on the Jets 10 yard line with a minute remaining. They then cut out with the announcement "We're not legally permitted to broadcast games live after 4:15 p.m. standard time."

Holy Heidi, Batman!

Blame the NFL's wild-and-wacky TV rules that are in play for whichever network doesn't have the double-header that week. This particular instance is the exact opposite of the "Heidi" rule (you must stick with the local game until it's over, even if it was over in the 1st quarter). Once the second set of games begin, TV stations have to stop broadcasting non-local games from the first set. It's really damn stupid.

I can only assume that Tennessee is considered a "local interest" game for Atlanta (regardless of the Atlanta Falcons), and was therefore allowed to continue playing down there. Unless, of course, you were watching it over satellite or something like that.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a 2006-listing of rules, but here's a summary of the ones from 2002, so they should be close enough:

From the rec.sport.football.pro FAQ (http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/index.nsf/Documents/0-faq#I6)

If I were a Jets fan, I'd just be happy that Pennington proved he can throw the ball farther than 25 yards. ;)

As for Cincy-KC...Cincy will be a monster this year. A monster.
