George Bush: "I thought when it was all said and done, the American people would understand the importance of taxes and the importance of security."

Peter David: I agree with Jon Stewart's assessment. I don't think Bush is dumb; I think he talks to *us* like he thinks *we're* dumb.

I came across the David quote (and am using it instead of the Stewart original since it appears to be a paraphrase) first, and only minutes later, saw that primo example of it above.

Oh, I saw that Bush press conference live yesterday, and boy, was it fun to see the deer-in-the-headlights look on his face right after he said that, the realization slowly coming over his face that he just called the American people a bunch of idiots. He actually looked quite befuddled the entire time; you could almost see the thought balloon over his head: "But... but Karl said we were gonna win!!"

PAD (and Stewart, by quotation) is right on the money there.

I liked the Colbert quote about how apparently America has tired of freedom.

I disagree, he really is a dumbshit.

Of course he talks to us like we were even more stupid than he is, the thing is, for most of the country, he's right.

A lot of people seem to think Bush is Satan, that he is deliberately evil. I disagree. I think, like you said, he's just dumb. He really has no freakin' clue.

William MacLeod: "I would think that a President would realize the importance of personal freedom and liberty for the citizens of his nation and not sacrifice that freedom and liberty for the false veil of insured security."

I saw Peter's statement first and then saw the second later in the day. My brain made the same connection.

I've been saying that right along. I don't think Bush is stupid at all. I think he a very crafty, dishonest man who thinks everyone is dumber than him and that he can get away with things by just telling people what they want to hear.

Yes, GW, some of us understand the importance of taxes, but unfortunately you politicians see a vote for you as a "yes" for everything you believe in, and it's not. Just because I voted for you in 2000 doesn't mean I actually wanted your religious bullshit clogging up the presidency, it means I wanted lower taxes and anyone but Gore in office, and that I thought your religious pandering was bullshit political hype like every other politician. This is why I voted my conscience in 2004.

We understand security, but we also understand liberty just a tad bit better.

Unfortunately, the same ignorance about what voting for you means, the Democrats will take it and run with it. I was hoping for Republican senate so we'd have pure gridlock as Congress is supposed to be, but hopefully this will work out similarly.
