As noted by [livejournal.com profile] curt_holman, the folks at Walden Media and Henson Studios are making a live-action movie out of Edward Gorey's The Doubtful Guest. I'm doubtful (ahem) about how well it'll work, but Walden and Henson both get a lot of slack from me.

Umm ... correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't The Doubtful Guest have absolutely no plot whatsoever?

And wasn't a great deal of the point that the creature was uncanny and inexplicable, not so much cute or "mischievous"?

And wouldn't the sum total of all of the extant material only add up to maybe ten minutes of film?

Gah ... why doesn't anyone do short subjects any more ... you could just animate what's there with a narrator voiceover and produce something marvelous ... *clutches her head*

Exactly. While it may look ok- or maybe not- it's bound to be rather awful, just because it'll have a PLOT and a BACKSTORY and HUMAN INTEREST grafted unnaturally onto it.

Sigh.

ooh!

six years ago one of my friends filmed a homage to Gorey (http://pentaworks.org/hapless/) and it won an award at the ann arbor film festival. :)
