Wikipedia amusement
Apr. 24th, 2007 11:56 amFrom the entry on one of my favorite characters, John Dortmunder:
Another interesting comparison can be drawn with the character of Rincewind in the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett, with whom John shares the trait of extreme pessimism brought on by a seemingly endless supply of bad luck. Dortmunder does not share Rincewind's obsession with the potato.
(emphasis mine)
Color me amused. Yeah, it probably needs to be edited out from a "Wikipedia standards" POV, but I like it (and find it appropriate in light of both characters).

Date: 2007-04-24 05:28 pm (UTC)OTOH, if you look at Rincewind as a bit of post-optimistic Candide, i.e. what Candide would be like AFTER he abandons the philosophy of optimism, then Rincewind and Candide share a lot of similar traits.
My wife thought it was rather amusing that I described Candid as "Well, it's a Rincewind Discworld novel, but Candide isn't smart enough to run."
