Actual, real-life quote about the Heroes for Hire debacle by MIsty Lee, magician (and wife of Paul Dini), who must have made her brain disappear during one of her acts:
And you know, also, someone raised the point in, I don’t know if it was in a forum I was reading but it’s something I’ve heard a million times before - but usually, the strongest and loudest protest over sexy things come from ugly fat girls. And now I don’t necessarily agree with that and I’m probably going to get some awesome flame mail as a result of this, but as somebody who’s relatively secure in her sexuality - I don’t think I’m the hottest broad out walking around - I definitely don’t think I compare to some of these comic book chicks - but that doesn’t mean that I don’t like to look at ‘em. I find the feminine form very appealing and I’m not at all offended by that.
Just goes to show that you don't have to be male to play bingo. Or to play the "inflammatory quote attributed anonymously to someone else to avert blame" game. Or to just be a complete fucking idiot.

Date: 2007-06-09 07:24 pm (UTC)Indeed. Because:
1. Fat chicks are necessarily ugly;
2. Fat chicks are the only ones who think sexism is ugly; and
3. It's okay to repeat anonymous inflammatory comments.

Date: 2007-06-11 05:11 pm (UTC)You see, I've seen Misty Lee perform. I've been within handshake distance of her, and considering that plus the above statment I still don't feel secure enough in my knowledge of her to call her a moron. In fact, I don't know that unless I knew here personally, at least on the "named accquaintence" level, I'd feel secure in doing so.
This is not to say that one cannot call a public figure an idiot, but it seems that it would first require a pattern of behavior, not a single statement.
It smacks of a logical flaw and argument faux pas, arguing the person rather than the argument. To some extent, the "ugly fat girl" comment above is another example and is one of the many reasons I find the whole thing objectionable.
This is not even to get into the fact that people are spewing bile and swearing oaths over a fucking comic book cover. As messed up as the world is today, it seems this concentration of vitrol might better be reserved for worthier topics.
But that's just my opinion. Feel free to take it or leave it as you wish.
Peace.
