1. Eva Mendes will be playing Sand Saref in The Spirit, joining Scarlett Johansson as Silk N. Floss . I'm more partial to P'gell as the perfect femme fatale from the comics, but Saref is a step up from Floss.

2. Because you demanded it: Warner Brothers to produce Todd McFarlane's vision of The Wizard of Oz. Yes, the one with Bondage Dorothy (link is NOT safe for work or fans of good artwork). The good news, of course, is that this cannot suck any more than The Muppets Wizard of Oz did.

3. Michael Bay threatens to not direct a Transformers sequel because of Paramount's rejection of Blu-Ray! I've been agnostic in the Format Wars to date, but this officially pushes me over the edge to HD DVD. If every studio adopts it, we might be rid of Bay for good!

4. NYMag's the Vulture, responding to the ludicrous assertion that music piracy has cost the US economy 12.5 billion dollars, speculates on how the money would have been spent. Warning: Do not view the infographic while drinking coffee.

4.5 Incidentally, here's a flowchart showing just how the RIAA makes these decisions (ganked from Boing Boing).

5. New Google Earth! Now with Google Sky. It's full of stars!

5.5 Of course, there's still Celestia, for those who just want the space side of things.

6. West Virginia University: Still #1! Note that Emory briefly cracked the list sometime in the '90s, which shows that the methodology is royally fucked up.

7. Seth Godin on business cards mistakes.

8. Freakanomics and the NY Times admit that the previous full RSS feed is going bye-bye. This might be a good time to note that partial feeds can be overcome.

9. Roger Simon: Still a complete fucking moron.

10. Finally, Terry Pratchett: Still not a knight. He also appears to have the final "t" on his surname revoked. Or possibly the penultimate one (ganked from [livejournal.com profile] desperance).

...which makes two bizarre reimaginings of The Wizard Of Oz (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910812/) coming to screens large and small near us in the near future.

Why? Someone tell me why? (Although the casting on Tin Man looks promising.)

Great. Now I'm imagining Zooey Deschanel with two large watermelons duct-taped to her, and trying not to barf.

Wait... Sand Seraf AND Silk N. Floss are in THE GODDAMN SPIRIT movie? I wonder how Miller will differentiate them: will one be the Butch Lesbian Whore and the other the Whore With The Heart of Gold? Or is one the Cold, Distant Bitch Whore and the other the Asian Ninja Whore?

Silk N. Floss is going to be a secretary of some kind. I've never read The Spirit but I understand she's a doctor in it isn't she?

Bay has apparently recanted. My friend had this to say on the whole Bay thing:

From the "What A Schmuck" Department in Battle Creek, Michigan...

It appears that Michael Bay, Friend to the Proletariat, Defender of the Video Faith, has been served a rather bitter dish. Witnesses detected a few jet-black feathers falling from the tray as it was placed before good Mr. Bay...

I'll let him do the talking now:

"Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three Blu-Ray owners, they were pissed about no 'Transformers' Blu-Ray and I drank the kool aid hook line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted -- nothing good ever comes out of early am posts mind you -- I over reacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard. As a director, I'm all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision. So today I saw 300 on HD-DVD, it rocks! So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!"

I figure it probably went a little more like this:

"Last night, I was coked out of my mind and one of the midgets dancing the cha-cha on my belly mentioned that 'Transformers' wouldn't be coming out for his Blu-Ray player. After I cleared the butterscotch pudding from my eyes and had another blast of Cola, it occurred to me that this was bad. I might not make enough money to buy South Dakota and turn it into my own country. As the jello dripped from my naked frame, I stomped to my platinum-plated computer and fired off a post to my legion of groupies. The next morning, my handlers came to bathe me and dry me off with towels made of 2 dollar bills. One of them suggested that my glorious career could be impacted by such an idiotic statement, and that I might wish to recant if I ever wanted to get that clone of Eddie Munster produced, let alone work in Hollywood again. I needed a little rough action to clear my coke-addled brain, so I watched that sweaty Spartan movie. Wow, HD-DVD is neat! Oh, yeah, and it looks like it might be the first one to hit the retail sweet spot, which means it might win the format war, and I really, really want that Eddie Munster clone (not to mention South Dakota). So, I'm sorry. Please let me make movies again! I'll even make another Transformers movie. As long as there are lesbians throwing pudding at me and cursing my name. Otherwise, no deal."

I think the appropriate response here is something along the lines of 'Fuck you, you fucking fuck. Fuck right off with a side of fuck.'

I hope one of those lesbians hits him in the eye with a glob of pudding and it stings.

A lot.
