Read This, Part 2.
Nov. 5th, 2007 10:00 amI held off on pointing folks to 'song's stuff until today because I wanted to wait until she'd written at least four pieces. I held off on this post because I'd hoped for better news from the WFAs (gorram Gene Wolfe).
Six days ago, The Orphan's Tales: In The Cities of Coin and Spice came out.
It's the follow-up to The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden.
Both are by
yuki_onna, and they form the four sections (two per book) of an incredible story, which, in turn, contains dozens of other amazing stories. The first book won the Tiptree, and was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award this past weekend. I can't even begin to do justice to
yuki_onna's writing style; she's got a truly unique and special voice. She's also shown herself to be a phenomenal storyteller.
In the Night Garden was the first truly "adult" book that Elayna read, and she was completely taken by it (to the extent that finishing it was more important than starting the final Harry Potter). It's simply an amazing collection of intertwined tales, and one that everyone should own.
For those who have the books and want more of The Girl in the Garden, the amazing
s00j has recorded two wonderful albums of songs inspired by these books. For the Girl in the Garden and Solace and Sorrow are amazing recordings on their own, but even better when heard after reading the books.
If you are really lucky, you'll manage to catch
yuki_onna and
s00j on tour together. The combination of listening to stories from the books and hearing the songs they inspired makes for an amazing experience. I was lucky enough to catch them last year, and it was truly a joy.
Go read these books and listen to this music. You will not be disappointed.

We did see a big stack of the Orphan's Tales at Larry Smith's shop.
