i was about to say that jay mariotti is terrible beyond belief, but then i read that article. wow, philly wins. nothing says smart thinking like bringin up hitler.
I'm not defending his stupidity, because it was pretty darn stupid, but you have to understand something about Bill Conlin:
The man still thinks Color TV is a neat invention.
Seriously, I grew up reading him and the other writers (my parents had a subscription to the Inquirer), and I still go to the philly.com site almost every day to catch up on Philly sports and events. Bill Lyons? A great writer, a little crotchety though, but retired a number of years ago. Rich Hoffman? Probably the sanest sports writer there, usually makes a lot of good points. Conlin? A dinosaur who still talks about the 70s-era Phillies and the great Eagle teams of the pre-Super Bowl era and how Chuck Bednarik would even now kick the ass of every current Philly player.
The guy *STILL* insists that the worst thing to ever happen to baseball, in its entire, messed-up history, was inter-league play and the wildcard. Every other scandal or problem or rule change pales in comparison. Frankly, I'm surprised he even knows how to use the Internet.
Then again, he's still better than Stephen A. Smith. (Yes, ESPN watchers, Philly is sorry for having introduced the world to him.)
