hangingfire saw an early release of The Golden Compass, and was impressed.
fosteronfilm, who reviews it here, is less impressed, but still gives it three stars . I'm much more optimistic now.
2. Neil Gaiman linked to a ComixMix issue featuring Dream in Munden's Bar, which served to remind me about ComixMix in general. And the fact that they have Simone and Ajax. And Grimjack!
2.5 And there's a play based on Amelia Rules!? Must find a way to make it to New Hampshire this weekend.
3. Curious about the creative process behind the creation of the cover of Cory Doctorow's upcoming YA book, Little Brother? Wonder no more (and see some of the other covers that were considered).
4. Yet another way to support Steven Brust: The Adrilankha Gift Shop. Klava mugs! Yay!
5. I am shocked to hear that the videogame "media" outlets continue to confuse "ethics" with "advertising." Oh, wait. Never mind. Gamespot takes its editorial integrity extremely seriously. Especially when they get caught.
6. Speaking of media pitching their articles to favor advertisers, here's Mark Evanier breaking down the problems with the Reuters attempt to sow dissent amongst the talk show WGA strikers.
7. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be this year's Super Bowl Halftime show.
8. I'm still trying to get my brain around the idea of Blizzard and Activision merging. There was a time when I associated the latter with being edgy (back when they had the balls to take on Atari in the early '80s, and actually promoted the idea that games were designed by real human beings), but in recent years, they've gotten so big, any good games that come out of them are offset by the dozens of terrible ones (and let's not talk about what the did with the Infocom IP). Whereas Blizzard hasn't had a really bad game since The Death and Return of Superman (even if Warcraft III was underwhelming). That said, they're passing up a perfectly good opportunity to rename the company as "Blactivision" or "Activard."
9. The 10 most badass Bible verses (ganked from
thefirethorn).
10. Finally, it wouldn't be a Monday if we couldn't enjoy another good debunking of the canards being spread by the Discovery Institute courtesy of PZ Myers.
