Law and Order: SVU at Amazon!

Amazon's Deal of the Day is any of the first five seasons of Law and Order: SVU for $25.99 a pop (57% off). Since that's over $25, free shipping's a part of that deal, as well.

SVU is, as far as I'm concerned, a Homicide spinoff featuring Munch that's simply edited to give the other characters too much screentime. But Meloni and Hargitay, in fairness, are pretty damned good, as are Ice-T and B.D. Wong.

Bonus fact: Even though it's set in the same universe as Homicide, Meloni appeared on that show as a completely different character (during the seventh season, which mostly sucked, for reasons that have nothing to do with Meloni).

The first season of SVU was awful, save for an episode directed by Clark Johnson-- it's amazing how it's improved over the years.

I've never been a huge fan of the show -- CI is my only L&O must-see -- so I never know which of the occasional reruns I catch are from which season. I suspect that most of the ones that have put me off the show are from that first year.

SVU was the wrong show at the wrong time for me. I watched the first season out of loyalty to Belzer/Munch. It was on Mondays, my longest day at the newspaper (we published Tuesdays), and I realized I didn't want to see intensity after that. (One thing I'd do instead was save the previous week's Whose Line Is It Anyway? to watch those nights. Brainless and silly and "the help of Laura Hall" (who was cute) was more my speed.)

Oddly enough, CI is the only L&0 I won't watch - the Vincent d'Onofrio episodes, anyway. I'm not a big fan of the intuitive style of detection.

I still watch SVU loyally mainly because of Belzer/Munch, though lately he's been more conspicuous by his absence and I'm wondering why he still gets third billing in a show he's hardly ever in.
