I'd beg to differ. Pennington has done a ton with nothing in the way of receivers, and Favre has one of the most sure-handed groups out there -- Coles and Cotchery are great wide-outs, Keller's been a fine TE, and Clowney and Stuckey have come through more often than not. The receivers aren't the issue, the QB is. Favre more often than not has no idea what to do with his receivers. Five years ago, a QB of his talent, with this kind of offensive line, could have gotten twice the yardage.
Except that Pennington didn't do much of anything with the same receivers Favre has now. They've been showing lots of Jets game up here and I've been watching Coles and Cotchery drop lots of passes, to the point that announcers felt the need to declare them "back" last week when they finally had a good game.
But Pennington not only was playing hurt last year, but was playing with Justin McCareins as his #2 WR instead of Cotchery for most of the year. McCareins's middle name is actually, "Holy Shit, I can't Believe He Dropped Another Fucking Pass." And there was no one after Cotchery to catch the ball at all.
Also, the Jets had a much weaker offensive line last year.
Honestly, I've seen two dropped passes from Coles (one resulting in the ugly INT in this week's game, mind you), and none from Cotch in recent weeks. And Coles, more than perhaps any player I've seen, is able to not only grab a pass when a defender is bearing down on him, but take huge hits while doing so.
Again, not saying Pennington's better in his career, but he's simply playing better this year than Favre.
I don't know, I think Chrebet was better at making catches across the middle when the big hit was coming.
Even if Pennington is having a better year, and I don't think he is, it is unlikely he'd have had it in NY. The Jets needed a new QB this year one way or another. Pennington was viewed as a bust in NY by team and fans alike. Just the perception would have created a QB controversy. Heck, he had to compete for his job before Favre got there.
