The night the lights went out in Georgia
Jun. 5th, 2002 07:07 amSo, it was time for
deza,
shadesong, Mike, Thomas, and I to roll up characters. Mike was already here, Elayna had just gone to bed, and we were sitting around talking and flipping channels. I turned on the game, and saw that there was a rain delay. So I peeked through the blinds, not having heard any patter of raindrops.
And there, sitting on the power line across Lavista, was a burning branch. We opened the door to get a better look, and I ran to get the cordless phone to call 911. Before I could do so, there was a HUGE explosion, and the lights went out. Following by the lights starting to go back on, and another explosion. Followed by another one.
The house was now totally dark. Elayna was awake, of course, and we were comforting her. I got flashlights, and 'song got candles, and we set up camp while I dug up a non-cordless phone and called 911.
Mike and I took a look outside, and nothing seemed on fire or damaged, thankfully. The branch had gone out, as well. We figured it had caused a transformer to go all wonky. We saw a fire truck drive by, and saw that the traffic light was out.
After a few more minutes, it occured to us that although the fire department knew about the outage, GA power might not, so I dug through three phone books with the flashlight and found their emergency number. From there, I spoke to a very nice man who assured us that the power should be on within half an hour, unless something was seriously wrong.
In the meantime, Thomas arrived, Elayna attempted to catch fireflies, and the pizza we had ordered arrived. We attempted to put Elayna to bed again (to no avail, as she was still too scared), and set up the pizza and dug in. Soon enough, we saw the truck with the cherry picker outside getting the branch off, and about twenty seconds later, the power was restored. Huzzah!
Elayna was put to bed (with the cat staying with her to protect her), and
deza showed up immediately after, which allowed us to introduce her to Elayna (who didn't pull her shy act, even). And then we finally settled down to roll up characters. Which I'll detail when I get to work, unless
shadesong does so first.
