I'm sorry, but any list of the best coffee scenes in literature that doesn't include the opening of John Barnes's Gaudeamus is woefully incomplete.

I think I'm seriously low-brow, because I was bored by all of the quotes, and didn't think them hugely inspirational. The explanations I took to be like the tongue-in-cheek humor of those who are mocking the intelligentsia. Do the intelligentsia really talk like that? It seems so.

I guess I expected "best coffee scenes" to actually evoke coffee: the flavor, the effects, the environs, the atmosphere - not just "Do you want tea? No, I'll have coffee."
