I think I'm seriously low-brow, because I was bored by all of the quotes, and didn't think them hugely inspirational. The explanations I took to be like the tongue-in-cheek humor of those who are mocking the intelligentsia. Do the intelligentsia really talk like that? It seems so.
I guess I expected "best coffee scenes" to actually evoke coffee: the flavor, the effects, the environs, the atmosphere - not just "Do you want tea? No, I'll have coffee."
Honestly, I'd considered the idea that he was aiming for satire, but his paragraphs are too dull to be effective.
My take on it is that he's a precious debut author who wants to drop big names to get folks to read his work. He's confused "good book that mentions coffee somewhere" with "book that mentions coffee."
