Why teams don't always announce signings

I'd forgotten about this case, but over at Extra Bases, Gordon Edes reminds us that the reason teams don't often make public signing announcements until after the physical is because of Xavier Hernandez.

Of course, it also sort of sucked (and blew) last season, back when the Palladinos were still there. But at leas then it was only foisting one incredibly sucktastic couple (Lane and Zach) on us.
