Beowulf was wrong!
Nov. 6th, 2013 09:13 amWell, at least our translations have all been wrong.
Of course, to quote John Ford's best movie, "This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
From an academic point of view, of course, it matters, but from a literary point of view, I'm not sure the "legend," or bad translation, isn't the way to go.
(Also, let me repeat my recommendation to see Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage if it makes its way to your area.)
