Ten links make a post
Sep. 2nd, 2009 09:52 amBecause it's Back to School time (and we're swamped as a result), have some links (a few cribbed from my Twitter posts):
1. Google Books: A metadata train wreck.
2. Yes, Disney bought Marvel. Just a reminder: Warner has owned DC for years. I expect the changes will affect non-comic properties (license deals, movies, etc) more than the comic line itself (besides, could one make the mainstream MU suck any more, other than maybe by hiring Dan Didio?).
3. Speaking of Didio, here's why I've just pretty much thrown up my hands and said, "the hell with DC."
4. Keeping things comics-related, how in the world did I miss the fact that Darwyn Cooke is doing an adaptation of Richard Stark's Parker books? (Stark, of course, was a pen name of Donald Westlake.)
5. Here's a nifty Venn Diagram of Mythical Creatures.
6. The Food Timeline! Great for writers and/or foodies.
7. Ever wonder about how many video games are film adaptations (and how many big films get game tie-ins)? Someone's doing research into it.
8. Mary Pearson -- of Adoration of Jenna Fox fame -- is now blogging at Tor.com!
9. Ever wonder just how accurate those stats in the NBA are? Go find out. Now ask yourself if you think football (w/ tackles, PDEF, stuffs, etc) and baseball (errors) are any better.
10. Finally, in honor of Vermont becoming another state in which same-sex couples can finally get the same marriage rights as others, Ben and Jerry has temporarily changed the name of one of their flavors in VT.

Date: 2009-09-02 02:12 pm (UTC)Yeah, but Time/Warner doesn't have the family-friendly corporate face that Disney has, or wants to have. I worry about how this is going to affect things like the Miracleman/Marvelman reprints. All it takes is one Donald Wildmon type to notice that Disney is putting out a comic book (since comic books are just for kids, of course) featuring nudity, underage anal rape and extremely graphic violence, written by a British self-described anarchist and witch who prays to a snake god, and go on Faux News with all that. There will be boycotts.
People pooh-pooh this and point to the various violent/erotic Miramax films, as if any Miramax film were as graphic as Miracleman #15, and as if Disney didn't strong-arm Miramax into not releasing Kids or Fahrenheit 9/11 and regularly get into it with the Weinsteins.

Date: 2009-09-02 02:23 pm (UTC)That said, I'd forgotten that Marvel had Miracleman; I suspect that Moore's real-life stuff will matter less than the contents of MM itself, and that'll be a make-or-break decision for the company, imho. Mind you, Marvel's generally as dead to me as DC is, but I long ago lost my copy of the first volume of MM, so that's something I'll buy in a heartbeat.
Nifty.

Date: 2009-09-03 01:38 pm (UTC)But that's the stuff I care about!
Date: 2009-09-02 08:03 pm (UTC)Yeah, but that's the stuff I care about. Case in point (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/09/02/disneymarvel-deals-first-victim-spectacular-spider-man-tv-series/). (And this is the company that saw to start airing Superman, Batman, and Static Shock though it was produced by a rival company. Pinky and the Brain, too.)
The only reason to even follow the big two comics divisions is to see how they top itself from the last round of stupid.
And let me thank Dan DiDio. He never fails me in that regard.
