Over on Twitter, haikujaguar asked if cosmetics can go bad. Having just gotten our Internet connection back after two hours of downtime*, I googled for the answer, and found that cosmetics do, indeed, go bad.

Which only goes to reiterate that Bibi and Shirley in Night of the Demons 2 were insanely stupid.


*Although it's still crawlingly slow

I believe the general rule is anything older than 6mos should be tossed, because bacteria from application and the environment begin to do their thang.

I am now irritated because I can't find dates on any of this make-up. If it goes bad, and if it's pretty obvious to everyone that it goes bad, why aren't companies labeling them appropriately?

Because as far as I know, it's not a date from manufacturing, but a date since you opened it. Bacteria gets in it from being opened and touched to applicators and your face, etc.

A lot of foods are like that: they don't start going bad until after you open them. That doesn't stop manufacturers from stamping dates on them and adding things like "Best used 6 weeks after opening," etc.

Heh. Apparently I have a lot of unused makeup to throw out. I still have stuff that I bought in Harvard Square God knows how many years ago. :)

...which means 99% of my Girl Stuff should most likely be thrown away. I only ever really use concealer, lipstick, and eyeliner. Everything else tends to just be purchased for Hallowe'en costumes.
