The folks at the Vulture suggest that the hiatus is the fault of Ryan Murphy, and that Fox was accommodating his request.

much like the way he split each of the latter seasons of nip/tuck into two seperate chunks shown many months apart...dont be surprised if Glee follows the same pattern..

That's ok with me. I still have to watch last season's episodes of Burn Notice. So I will be busy watching that instead of Glee.
