I was a bit surprised to see that Del Taco barely exists on the East Coast. I remember them being reasonably common in NYC some twenty years ago.

I know there was one that I'd pass when growing up, somewhere in the '50s (I think).

Are you sure you're remembering Del Taco? I've lived in NYC my whole life and have never heard of it. We have Taco Bell, but not Del Taco.

There was at least one, somewhere in the '50s on the East side (it's been over 25 years, but I remember passing it a lot). I thought there might have been more, but I may be conflating "something I saw a lot" with "something that was common".
