Oak Park, MI Planning and Technology director Kevin Rulkowski is a complete and utter douchebag.

I'm not inherently opposed to zoning laws (they often actually accomplish a public good), but this is less a matter of a stupid law than of an asshole willfully being an asshole and misapplying the law.

There's a Cause2 page with a petition to help rub this in Rulkowski's nose, just to let him know we're all watching:

Oak Park has more things to worry about than someone growing food for her own family or 'hood. JEEBUS.

He's quoted as saying "If you look at the dictionary, suitable means common".

Really? If I look in the dictionary, it says that suitable means "acceptable or right for someone or something" - nothing there about how common it is.

It sounds like he's on a power trip and won't back down.

In a lot of neighborhoods, if your yard doesn't face the right way, you don't have enough sun for a veggie garden in the back yard. Does that mean that you are required to do without one?

(I've been keeping up with this a bit, since it's about 2 towns over. Seriously, everybody is rooting for her, and I suspect the judge, unless he's on the mayor's payroll, will tell him to stick it)
