Per Swank (one of the groups that handles public licenses), looks like it's not the con that would get in trouble for a non-licensed showing; it's the convention center.
We're not (and won't go as long as Wordcons are priced so that they're basically three or four times the price of other cons), but it came up on Nick Mamatas's Facebook page today.
Not to quibble, but since they run twice or three times as long, and advertising them and getting the original vote all costs more than a regular convention. However, I can understand financial reticence.
It's half a day longer than Arisia, and the at-the-door price is 4X the cost. That's not nearly enough to justify it for me; I do get that there are other costs, but I'm judging them from a consumer value for the money perspective, and they fail pretty miserably there.
I've never been to conventions in the Northeast; Chicagoland's local conventions didn't last four days, nor do the ones I've attended in the West. I wasn't aware of Arisia's length, having never considered traveling there due to my own financial constraints. Makes perfect sense now!
