If you haven't read it already, I'd highly recommend a gander at the Dan Simmons interview at Salon, at http://www.salon.com/books/int/2002/02/27/simmons/index.html -- it's a good read, even if I don't always agree with him. He certainly has a lot to say about the relevancy of many authors, although I find his scope a tad narrow. Worth a look, certainly.
