Gods, have I mentioned how much I love Dar Williams? I've been listening to a whole bunch of her songs on iTunes this morning. I still remember buying her second album (Mortal City) on the same day as Boys for Pele. I totally figured that the Tori album would have been the better one. After a week of attempting to listen to BfP, I gave up and put Mortal City on. It took me about one song to get hooked. "As Cool as I am" is still one of my all-time favorite songs by any artist, and the rest of the CD lives up to it.

And, alas, my love of Tori, though still strong (nothing can ever take away Little EarthQuakes or Under the Pink), hasn't recovered fully. BfP was quite possible the worst album I ever listened to more than once, and of her followups, only Strange Little Girls really struck me as a good album.

Last night in the car I was writing a song for [livejournal.com profile] disaster75 in my head. And I realized that it sounded a lot like some song. But I couldn't remember what. And I like went crazy for three hours racking my brain till I realized the song I was thinking of was "Hallelujah."

Dar rocks.

It's not the Leonard Cohen one. It's the one with the line "I died ten years ago, I'm still a legend at my high school." Dude, I thought that was on Mortal City...

I didn't really like "Strange Little Girls". I mean, I appreciated what she was doing, but it didn't really flip any switches for me. I *loved* "from the choirgirl hotel", though.

See, I'd never heard of most of those songs....

And I think Choirgirl works for me because I'm kinda tracking her journey. You can see a very definite trail being blazed through her mind as the albums go along, and I think sometimes these things aren't meant to fully make sense to *us* - I think it's a self-examination thing.

And BfP wasn't a great album, but you have to admit that there were some great songs on it...

Really? You're serious? No Talula? No Doughnut Song? Nothing?

I loved Professional Widow, but that was mostly because I love singing "gimme peace, love, and a hard cock".
