I am livid at Elayna right now. She called me out for help with the DVD of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I take a look at it -- it's fucking destroyed. She's obviously dropped it and cracked it. On both sides, so even the fullscreen version is ruined.

True, I've been wanting to get the 25th anniversary edition, but not enough to want to replace this one.

I've explained to her that from now on, when she mistreats a DVD or CD (especially one that's actually mine or shadesong's or mine), she'll be responsible for replacing it, and if that means that we have to sell something of hers, so be it.

If it's not too myuch trouble for you, tell her that she's not allowed to touch the DVDs anymore today. Help it sink in.

She's watching a video right now (Dr. Craplittle 2), but afterwards, when she's actually paying attention, I'll do so. I don't think I can stop her from watching videos, too, if I want to retain my sanity.

I love these threads, this is when I get to butt in with my totally non experience in childraising two bits.

Adam totally did it the right way. Punishing a kid for an accident is kind of silly, although I don't see how you can break a DVD by dropping it. But lets give the kid the benifit of the doubt. However, even for accidents there are usually consequences. If she damages something of someone elses by accident, she needs to replace it. Only if she does it on purpose should she be punished.

Just for the record.. At her age, I'd have urinated in the dvd player..

But I was a little messed up kid.

Right, I'm not saying that we're going to charge her for replacing the DVDs - just that, if she isn't allowed to handle them for the day, she'll have it reinforced that she can't be careless with them. Because she does tend to be.
