This bites -- according to http://www.comicon.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=32&t=000171 , Bill Messner-Loebs is on the verge of homelessness. He's a damned talented writer and artist, and it was his run on the Flash that made Wally West interesting again, back before the vastly overrated Mark Waid ran (sorry) the title into the creative ground. And his (and Sam Keith's) Epicurious the Sage is still one of the funniest things ever written, period.

Frankly, it really sucks, and says something about the comics industry, that a writer as talented as Messner-Loebs is out of work, and hacks like Fabien Nicieza, Ron Marz, and (let's face it) Grant Morrison have good books tossed in their laps to ruin.

I totallly agree with you on Messner-Loebs' contribution to the Flash vs. Waid's. Did you notice how the whole supporting cast basically vanished once Waid took over? Pied Piper was the only one who remained, and both his homosexuality and his concern for the poor went, as it were, poof.

I disagree totally about Grant Morrison, though, who is god.

Yep. Piper (the only rogue worth writing, other than Cap Boomerang, who was developed in Suicide Squad, then undeveloped by the simplistic Waid) was great, ditto Chunk and the various other characters.

As for Morrison, he may be God, in the sense that he's wildly inconsistent (just like the Bible's God), ranging from the guy who could give us the revamped and perfect Animal Man to the guy who could give us the revamped and sucky beyond all imagination X-Men. But I want comics written by mortals, who tend to do a better job on characterization.
