The Senate has already voted 99-0 to oppose the court ruling on the Pledge. Yes, even the folks like Charlie Schumer and Paul Wellstone voated this way.

Sigh. Talk about someone unfuckingqualified to be in the Senate.

For congress the constitution and the bill of rights are to be worked around, not revered.

Two things convinced me that every member of congress should be removed from office, declared ineligible to hold any office higher than dogcatcher, and tried for treason. The first was the CDA, which made it illegal to, among other things, post the text of the CDA on the internet, or call congress a bunch of fucking idiots. Passed with next to no votes against it, signed by Clinton, fast tracked to judicial review and promptly declared unconstitutional. So they re-wrote it and passed it again. And they keep trying. The second was that in November 1998 an initiative in the District of Columbia tried to legalize medical marijuana. For almost a year no one knew whether the referendum had passed, because Rep. Bob Barr ( R., Ga. ) impounded the $1.65 it would have cost to tally the vote. We all know Barr is an embarassment, but he can't do these things alone, congress doesn't work like that. Eventually, the courts overruled Barr. Seven Out of ten D.C. voters had decided in favor of legalization. Refusing defeat, Barr pushed a bill through Congress that blocked the spending needed to enact the new law. As fallback, Barr has also proposed a joint resolution of Congress to simply overturn by fiat the will of the people expressed freely and fairly at the ballot box. Not only does Barr completely circumvent the democratic process, but even his opponents don't think it's worth mentioning, just some lunatic internet agitators.

The CDA horrified me for the same reasons. I really feel that there should be a basic civics quiz given to each member of Congress, and anyone who views the Constituion or Bill of Rights as obstacles should be tossed.

As for Barr, well, Barr's opponents all run in a traditionally conservative (and anti-drug) district, too, which may be why they don't mention it. But Barr got me to do something I never thought possible -- root for John Linder!
