My favorite thing about October is that every station starts to play horror-oriented stuff.

To wit: Last night, I was over at [livejournal.com profile] jet_li_wannabe's place (along with Jerry and their friend Brian), for a guy's night out (playing Trivial Pursuit and watching the tube -- man, we're wild). And after watching one of the best playoff games I've seen (although it certainly paled in comparison to game 6 of the 1986 NLCS, as does every game), we flipped to AMC. Apparently, Halloween 5 is now considered a classic. After watching it unitl one, Jerry gave me a lift home, where, of course, I had to watch Halloween 4 and read more of The Straw Men, and watch a little bit of Ginger Snaps (as it was on one of the HBOs). So I was up until 4. Who cares?

Of course, AMC cuts films and shows commercials, but the channels that show complete films will also be focusing on horror.

I'm hoping we get a treat like the one IFC provided a couple of years ago, when they showcased the indie horror scene of the late '70s with films like Dawn of the Dead, Shivers, The Hills Have Eyes, and the original Halloween. Romero, Cronenberg, Craven, and Carpenter were masters back then, even if all of them have, to greater or lesser degrees, now lost much of what made them special.

Of course, on the big screen, it looks like our choices are two movies about haunted boats, because after Deep Rising (a guilty pleasure) and Virus (a wretched excuse for a movie), the market is so clearly waiting for more in that subgenre. Why they decided to release Halloween: Resurrection as a summer flick, I have no idea.

You noticed that about AMC too, huh? And of course, thanks to you, I now have that stupid song from Halloween 3 stuck in my head. Great. I will catch Ginger Snaps from the beginning someday.

As far as the big screen, have you not seen the trailers for The Ring????? Sheesh. I mean, I do have to see Ghost Ship--Gabriel Byrne and all that. And Lincoln Center is having a Horror Classics filmfest starting this week, I think. See, there are reasons you should be in NY. :-)
