So, it looks like things in LJ-Land are nearly ok again, so I'll risk trying a post, and hope that I don't have comments vanish again.

Turns out that the problem with the computer was the hard drive. I'd ruled it out since it wouldn't boot off the CD, but the HD was damaged enough that it actually stalled things out before the CD could be queried. Unplugging it (and trying another IDE drive, just to make sure it wasn't the port on the board) worked fine. Good news, as hard drives are cheaper than logic boards. Better news, because there may be a free one around here. So I may be back online on my own machine sometime next week.

Of course, the bad news there is that I never back-up my files. It's for the same reason that doctors are terrible patients. :-) Most of what's lost is just a pain to replace -- applications that I'll need to reinstall (and find registration numbers for, in some case), work files that I probably should have deleted already, various reading material I'd downloaded (both "legit" e-books and porn), saved game files (*sigh* I'll never make it through Diablo II LOD now), etc -- the worst part is replacing the stories I had. The one story I've completed in the last year is actually backed up on my work server, and I should be able to reconstruct some of the others, but it's frustrating (and I can't blame anyone but myself, for being a bloody idiot).

On the kitchen front, I made my first stab at doing stuff with the kitchen yesterday, moving some stuff that we never use into the cabinets above the stove, moving the bakeware to the drawer below the stove, and moving the cookware from the cabinet into the shelfspace that was cleared up. It's still far from perfect (and will remain so), but it's better. The cookbooks are going to be a separate project, of course. :-)

I back things up all over the place, and I still fret that I haven't done enough backing up (and actually, I know I haven't--the place I back up the most often is in the apartment, and I forget to mail stuff to myself here as often as I should.).

I learnt the backing-up lesson a couple of weeks ago when the hard drive went on my old backup computer, taking with it a whole bunch of text and image files and some databases I was just about to need... just my luck on the timing there.

Backing things up religiously now on my main computer.
