From an interview at moviehole with Gus Van Sant:

“Psycho” was great, a huge kind of grand experiment project. Very trial by fire. It met with a lot of criticism – but we managed to keep afloat, I think we broke even. But no, I wouldn’t remake another movie again, however, I’m thinking of remaking “Psycho” again. Doing a third remake. The idea this time is to really change it – we’re talking about doing a Punk rocker setting. Viggo Mortensen suggested it. He was married to Exene Cervenka and knows all the right people to get involved – all the right punk rocker etc – so he would definitely be involved if we go ahead.

Jesus fuck. You know all that shit I say about human life being so valuable that I can't condone capital punishment or war? Throw it out the window right now. Van Sant is one nipple suit away from becoming the next Schumacher.

I don't need to read this shit right before going to bed. Really.

That's just the problem with Hollywood. When a movie is done well once and does well in the box office, everyone suddenly wants to remake it, letting out cries of "Hey, look! A cash cow!". Said remakes are, almost without fail, dismal wastes of finances. At the same time, movies that really need to be remade ("Relic", "Vampires") studios won't touch with a 40 ft pole because their original incarnations failed at the box office. Umm, hello? Doesn't the fact that a movie did well in theaters the first time mean it was done right the first time? Why not spend resources on creating something original or remaking something that actually needs to be redone? My only guess is that movie execs can never see potential in a movie that hose jobbed the book it was based on because they never read. Due to this we get movies based on other successful movies, and movies based on old TV shows.

Coming next year- Gilligan's Jurassic Park

I choose to read this as one big fat tongue-in-cheek joke acknowledging what a bad idea the "Psycho" remake was in the first place. I further choose to interpolate a certain self-abnegating apologetic quality. Makes it all much easier to take.
