Food porn

I'm rapidly becoming addicted to the Food Network's show Unwrapped. I was first hooked on the episode about vending machines, which featured a nice segment on the Horn and Hardart automats (I was so depressed to learn that the last one closed when I was away in college, as the automat was one of my favorite "restaurants" as a kid), but the episode about appetizers, showing the Nancy's Quiche story, was a hell of a lot of fun. Although it gave short shrift at the end to dim sum, most of the other segments were worthwhile (including a look at the TGI Fridays test kitchens).

Sigh. The less food I eat, the more obsessed with it I become.

Heh - yeah - Unwrapped is particularly hard for me to watch right now because of Atkins...most of the foods they unwrap are fav's that can't be had anymore :P.

Emeril isn't *too* bad while on Atkins though :) Pork Fat Rules! ;)

PBS has a special called Sandwiches That You Will Like. They go around the country looking at regional specialties. I liked it better than a lot of the Food TV shows because it isn't quite as scripted, though I do have soft spots for Alton Brown, Jacques Torres, and the Unwrapped guy who used to host Double Dare.

Some of the shows are ridiculously scripted. I like Alton Brown, though, since his show is clever and entertaining. I like the food science aspect of it, which most food shows never seem to touch upon. Jacques Torres is fun, but I rarely watch his show because there's no way I'm ever going to build, say, a pure sugar corn stalk centerpiece for my Thanksgiving table.

oh man, i love alton brown!
he is a riot! has that dry sense of humor that i grew up with around my dad. and the food science stuff thrown in is so different than anything else on now a days - i find it all throughly fascinating.
and i like unwrapped too, i get so hooked on it.
there i am in front of the toob every monday night watch it!
i especially love it when they show anything on how anything chocolate is made. :)

Someone wrote a book about Horn and Hardarts relatively recently. You might want to look for it. I read a review of it and it sounds interesting. I think it includes some of the recipes.

I find unwrapped a fun diversion.. If you can get around the fact that the host if a complete moron.. Top 5 (I think thats what its called) is pretty good too
