So, we went to the Ren Fest yesterday. Our initial caravanning group consisted of [livejournal.com profile] shadesong, Elayna, [livejournal.com profile] mightywombat, [livejournal.com profile] blueingenue, [livejournal.com profile] libidoergosum, [livejournal.com profile] mermaidblue, and Alex. We met up with [livejournal.com profile] charlesb, [livejournal.com profile] not_hothead_yet (and brood and friends whose LJ names I can't remember), [livejournal.com profile] vidicon and [livejournal.com profile] bheansidhe at the gate, and found the newly-renamed [livejournal.com profile] missbiscuit and [livejournal.com profile] mightywombat's friend Lisa (whose LJ name, if she has one, I didn't catch) at the tavern.

The fair, as always, was fun and hectic. With Elayna and with a large group, it's not quite as stress-free as I'd like it, but we managed to see more than we had last year.

Highlights (other than just hanging out at various times with lots of fun people) included:

•The Birds of Prey show, which featured a peregrine falcon (which I've seen before, but is always beautiful to watch), an owl, and a condor (I've now seen both the condor and the bald eagle, and been within about ten feet of both). Elayna was impressed, and we got a picture of her with the owl (an eagle owl, btw).

•Hack and Slash, a damned fine comedy sword-fighting duo (Elayna liked them, although she remembered the bad jokes they told pre-show more than anything else).

•The Zucchini Brothers, one of my long-time favorite acts, a pair of nifty jugglers (Elayna quite enjoyed them, too).

•The Lost Boys, a nifty group (who I'd never seen before) who covered old heavy metal songs in a medieval manner (not manor -- we were outside).

•The tea house, which I'd managed to avoid for years, not thinking it was worth spending time in. Turns out it's a delight. The tea was great, and they had real English Pub Food. I had a lovely Scotch egg and a pork pie.

•The pub sing, which was a blast (and Elayna sang along with the chorus of some of the songs, although I'm damned glad she didn't pick up all the lyrics of the verses).

Overall, a nice day, but definitely exhausting.

Did the Lost Boys do the Scottish ballad "Loch Lomond"? They like to end the show with that piece sometimes and it's very different from their usual "Renaissance Rock n' Roll". Beautiful piece.

[livejournal.com profile] vill and I saw them on Saturday but we didn't get the full treatment because it was pouring rain and they weren't performing onstage at all, but in the nearby hair-braiding shop. Made for a smaller more intimate performance. :)

cheers,
Phil

I came across your post when I was looking for the Lost Boys Website (http://www.thelostboysonline.com/home.html). I was there Saturday and they did Loch Lommond and it brought tears to my eyes.

I *heart* the Lost Boys! They're a lot of fun, and really nice guys, to boot.

::Falls over laughing:: ah, the exotic delights of the pork pie...

Wouldn't an eagle owl be big enough to carry Elayna off? I saw one on Saturday and it was clearly weighing up its chances of getting our labrador...

Probably big enough.... but she weighs three times what it does. The condor looked big enough to carry *me* off.
