Random Friday morning crap

In less than 24 hours, I'll be on a plane to Big Rapids, MI, home of Ferris State University (the only University to pass out at 31 Flavors last night) and the 2003 Resnet conference.

I looked online, and the weather last night was 40 fucking degrees.

Fuck.

But it might hit the high 70s during the day, so that'll be okay.

And, there is a giant four-story spider at the University (because what University would be complete without one?). You can see it here.

In other news, major insomnia last night. Woke up at 12:30, stayed up until 3:30. Ick.

But I do remember snippets of two dreams. Those who have heard me talk about dreams know that I don't tend to remember any details, ever.

But last night, in a dream I had after going to sleep the first time, I know I encountered Jason Vorhees (gee, could watching the marathon last week have influenced this?). It wasn't a nightmare, though. He was just another character in the dream, and although he was trying to kill the usual teenagers, he was leaving me and whoever I was with alone. It was more like two plotlines passing in the night -- I'd be walking along, heading someplace vague, and he'd pass me on the way to chop up two kids having premarital sex.

The other dream snippet had me married to Cameron Diaz. I'm not sure what the rest of that dream was like, but I know I love the theme. :-)

Had computer trauma this morning, as my computer kept pulling a bad IP address from DHCP. I'm hoping it's our DHCP server, and not the laptop, as I need to be online from Big Rapids.

In two hours or so, shadesong and I should be off to lunch with aussie_nyc!

And I found my business cards! Woohoo!

yay resnet! I worked in Barnard's residential computing program, while I was in college; our coordinator used to turn up at that show every year. hope it's useful and fun for you.

We actually hosted Resnet at Emory once year, and it was quite nifty. This is the first one I've traveled to, though. Small town issues aside, I'm excited about it.

Small world. A long time ago my first wife was a reference librarian for a year at Ferris State's library, and of course I had to come along. I recall cooling off in the Muskegon river...

Turns out I already do. I found the issues while looking through my collection for stuff on a paper I'm co-writing. A quick re-read confirmed that I recall the story lines and mostly was impressed.

I did think Hank Pym was just a bit too cowardly, but it all worked out.

Cool -- glad you already had it. Pym was a tad cowardly, but depending on which of his thirty personalities over the years he's wearing, cowardly is certainly an option for him.

I think the writer was channeling the HP from West Coast Avengers who was too scared/weak to get off a boat deck while Tigra and Hellcat fought TigerShark in San Francisco Bay.

The spider seems to be at the Meijer Sculpture Gardens in Grand Rapids (unless I've missed something). Grand Rapids is actually a city, as opposed to the little town that Big Rapids is.

I'm living here at the moment before heading off to NYC, as I think I said before.

Thanks -- actually, it looks like they're busing us into Grand Rapids for the scupture garden. Thanks for the offer about info about the city. Alas, they pretty much keep us programmed througout the day. I think that the Walgreens right off campus is about the sum total of my Big Rapids experience. :-/ Great campus, though.

In the last dream I remember, there were ads all over the television promoting the health benefits of drinking urine, kinda like the "Got Milk" ads the National Dairy Council puts out. I already know I'm lactose-intolerant; I don't want to know if I'm urea-intolerant. I'll take a Cameron Diaz dream over a pee-drinking dream any day.
