So, as many of you know by now, the National Do-not-call Registry has been blocked, at the behest of the DMA and a judge who is either ignorant of the law, or in the DMA's pocket.

In honor of this event, I suggest a new national holiday:

National Bitchslap a Telemarketer Day.

Obviously, the holiday would take place on October 1, the day the act was supposed to have gone into effect. Celebrating the holiday is pretty simple: Find a telemarketer. Bitchslap him or her. Wish him/her a happy holiday.

If you cannot find a telemarketer (like vampires and psycho killers, they often look like everyone else), simply wait for one to call you. Then ask them if you can go over to their house and bitchslap them.

Full disclosure: I was woken up from a headache-induced nap by one of these creatures today.

Good idea! If it weren't for telemarketers, i could be more nocturnal, which is my preference. But every goddamn time I try to sleep during the day, one of them calls and wakes me up. Grr.

You know, if you ever institute that holiday, it might be the only time ever that I'd be sad if I didn't get called by a telemarketer.

I have given the Telemarketers until October 1st to be nice. Now, I will tell them to fuck off.

I think Dave Barry had the right idea. We need a website that collects telemarketer phone numbers and posts one every month or so. Loyal followers of the site then spend that month calling the telemarketers and offering them once-in-a-lifetime deals with bonus long distance minutes and a jar of roaches if they will just hand over a corporate credit card number.

If any of the companies raises a fuss, we scream Freedom of Speech.

Depending on the wording of the laws of the two organizations, he probably has a point. FCC covers communications such as the telephone, FTC covers general trade issues. He didn't say to get rid of the list, just that the list needs to be done by the FCC and not the FTC.

The whole "Well that's what we meant for the FTC to do" doesn't matter, it's a case of "say what you mean, not what you think you mean" when writing laws. I'm sure they'll get the necessary wording changes passed soon enough. Only an idiot would block this thing when they require the goodwill of the people to continue in their jobs (i.e., any elected officials).

Yep, pretty much what I plan to do tomorrow.

Though the fax messages will actually be related to the case. Because the judge was obviously missing when the brains were passed out and went to a mail order law school.

Dave Barry bitchslapped 'em for us, right where they live. Oooowee, they are going to get *such* a telephone bill at the end of the month! In the meantime, of course, I promise to bitchslap any of them I run across.

And in a surprising show of intelligence, Congress has said they are willing to write a law to grant the FTC specific power to create the registry. One, it's what 50 million of their constituents want. And two, they're probably sick of people calling them too.
