It's been twenty years since we've had a pop song containing the lyrics "She's got the love monkey riding on her back," or "Make the monkey blind," and fifteen years since we've had one asking, "Do you love your monkey or do you love me?"

Really. If Britney would just add some monkeys to her lyrics, she'd do wonders for her oeuvre. Who wouldn't have liked "Hit My Monkey One More Time?"

(two out of those three songs are really really recognizable. The third is for folks who spent too much time watching MTV in the '80s, and is thus, in my opinion, just as recognizable as the other two)

Great. Now I have "Monkey" by George Michael stuck in my head. And to my infant son I'm singing "Why can't you set your monkey free?" Gah!

The UBL list for songs titled "Monkey" is several pages long. (http://store.artistdirect.com/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/AppLogic+Search?select=Songs&searchstr=monkey&searchtype=NormalSearch&start=1&from=schema)Then at the end you can do a "broader search." DANG that's a lotta monkeys.

pop goes the monkey

It's true, Aldo Nova's "Monkey on My Back" and Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" were both more than 20 years ago, but Jethro Tull's "Steel Monkey" was only around 17 years ago, I think.

monkey!

You know, I *like* the George Michael song, but then I'm a freak.

I agree that strategically placed monkey lyrics would help pop music. Perhaps country and western and r&b as well.

Maybe rap monkeys! I want to hear Snoop rapping about monkeys!

George Michael and Rick Springfield.

I think I'm going to have to hate you now for getting those stuck in my head. :P

The Peter Gabriel was already there.

"In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey"... And who could forget that funky monkey, the brass monkey?

Great, now I've got spooky visions of a monkey themed compilation dancing in my head.
