Wow. For those not paying attention to the important stuff, the Oscars were announced today (and shame on New Hampshire for holding a primary on the same day!). And Hollywood actually showed some balls. Two acting nominations for In America (a movie that, in my book, could have landed folks in all four categories)! Recognition of a foreign animated film, again! Giving credit to Johnny Depp for a blockbuster! Naomi Watts and Charlize Theron and Ken Watanabe all getting props! As always, deserving people have been left out (Jamie Lee Curtis really did deserve a nod for Freaky Friday, even if that would mean dissing Diane Keaton, and why does American Splendor only appear once on this list?), but it's a better list than in years past.

Nominees (just listing the categories I care about most. See http://www.oscar.com/nominees/nomineelist.html for the rest)

Wow. That really is quite the list. All kinds of nods for Lost in Translation. And -- no nom for Cold Mountain or The Last Samuri! I figured they were such obvious Oscarbait they'd get nominations just for existing, whether or not they were any good. That's fantastic and amazing that they didn't. Woo.

While I agree with most of them, I was a little disappointed that Sean Astin wasn't nominated for Supporting Actor. I thought he was probably the most convincing actor in the movie outside of Andy Serkis. Unfortunately Serkis' work probably falls under best effects with the work they did with Gollum.

Actually, didn't he get a Sup. Actor nod last year?

Nope:
Chris Cooper, Adaptation (winner)
Ed Harris, The Hours
Christopher Walken, Catch Me If You Can
John C. Reilly, Chicago
Paul Newman, Road to Perdition

(I knew memorizing these things would come in handy someday...)

Nice to see Master and Commander on the best picture list. I think it will get run over by LOTR, but its still a great historical flick.

If LOTR doesn't finally get some major-category props, I'm going postal. (Wanna come?) If Seabiscuit gets the nod over LOTR, Lost in Translation, Master & Commander and Mystic River, I may look into acquiring weapons of mass destruction.
