Here's my take on it. It's a comedy the gives you this massive suspension of disbelief beforehand. So virtually any situation is funny from the getgo because its so outrageous out of the starting gate. I think all the adult swim natives are based on this principle; Sealab, CTC, Brak show. Sorta like the Terry Pratchett approach with Nightwatch and the like, you begin the story without some explanation as to why there are vampires and werewolves, there just are.
Gee, now that you put it in such clearly articulated terms, they're not so funny anymore... :( Kinda like what happens when Mulholland Drive starts to make sense.
