Well, fuck
Apr. 4th, 2004 01:50 amI was going to post a nice recap of a fun night spent gaming at
jet_li_wannabe's, with lots of fun people, a good game of A2A, Trivial Pursuit, watching of the NCAA games, and a rant about being the only person in the room who remembered the Sister Souljah situation.
But then I got home and found out that Wonderfalls was cancelled.
Fuck.
God fucking forbid that we should watch a fucking smart TV show. God fucking forbid that Fox should even give a show a chance.

Date: 2004-04-03 10:53 pm (UTC)TV broke my heart for good when Farscape got it in the spinal cord. Battered before that; now it's hard for me to care about any of them.
Damn

Date: 2004-04-04 10:58 am (UTC)They started out as the "fledgling fourth network", and that forced them to be innovative and cutting edge. They had to take huge risks and air things that no one else would ever dream of. It was either that or fail completely.
Now they've become just another network, and it seems, at this point, that they want very much to APPEAR to be edgy and "out there", but only if they can do it while actually playing it safe.
I think that's why they keep launching these new and interesting series and then going into a panic if the shows aren't immediately huge popular successes.
If they don't eventually take a chance and ride one of these shows out for at least a season, I only see two possible futures for Fox: (1) They just fade away. They'll never get anywhere showing 10 episodes (or less) of a series and then starting up a new one. (2) They become the "reality TV network".
My fear is that the second scenario is the more likely of the two. Reality shows are so cheap that the network can make a profit even if the ratings are much lower. Sadly, more and more networks seem to be realising this, and more and more reality shows are being scheduled as a result.
Besides the fact that I loathe reality shows in general (I suppose there could be an exception or two, but very few, if any), I really believe this is extremely short-sighted and is never going to pan out in the long run.
Either way though, I don't really care what happened to Fox any more. I may shed a tear or two over the future of television in general, if this reality trend keeps up, but I don't plan on getting lured in by Fox's next "oh look at us how hip and daring we are" routine, when they launch some other interesting-sounding series that has a half-life shorter than Strontium-89.
the solution to our woes
Date: 2004-04-05 06:01 am (UTC)Quality programming - this does not necessarily mean FAMILY programming (i.e. - Angel and such) -, choice, live stats, .....
wait, won't work. we'd have to teach people to use aerials and their brains again. free tv with choice and interactivity. won't sell.
sorry for using your time.
