The Tony Award nominations have been announced.

Was the revival of Little Shop really that bad? You can usually just sneeze and get your revial nominated for Best Revival, but other than one acting nom, it's shut out.

Even without having seen any current B-way show, it's hard not to root for Kristin Chenoweth for best actress (although I'd imagine that she and Menzel will hurt each other by both being up as lead actresses).

And hey! Boy George, up for a Tony. Who knew?

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] aussie_nyc points out this article in the Times, worth a read to anyone who gives a damn about theatre.

We saw Little Shop and loved it.

Also: Public Editor on the NY Times and the Tony Awards (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/09/weekinreview/09bott.html) is well worth reading.

I think it was less problems with Little Shop (which was indeed pretty strong) than a really crowded field this year. I suspect its's the show that got bumped when Assassins was ruled a revival.

yeah, it was controversial. the commitee gets to rule by fiat on these things, and the rules are squishy. I think it's something like 'if it has entered the theatrical repertory, it gets considered a revival.' for Little Shop, which got ruled on months ago, the consensus was that it's pretty widely performed. but Assassins? reporting a week or so ago indicated committee members were pretty split on it.

in light of the ny times article, I wonder how cynical the decision was. Assassins would have almost certainly taken Best Score, and given Wicked a run at Best Musical. So, voters with a vested interest in Wicked likely weren't sad to see Assassins get bumped to revival.

I'd love for Idina to win, but if any Wicked actress wins, it'll prolly be the media darling, Kristin. Boo.

I'll admit to seeing none of them, but I'm seriously pushing for Wicked to runaway with it all. I'm just dying to see it!!!

The book was just fantastic.....
