For those twenty people who saw Down With Love (and anyone who's a fan of old movies should rent it, as it's a perfect tribute to/update of the old Rock Hudson/Doris Day movies), there's an short article on the theory behind the sets over here. It's not quite Monster House, but it's still a good quick read (especially since the look of the sets was so vital to the movie).

Heh. The two really negative reviews at Amazon are both hysterical. Sometimes literally -- "The Director's Guild of America should REVOKE Peyton Reed's membership for this travesty." I can only assume that at some point during the screening, the film rose up and ate this person's dog.

One of the more thoughtful non-entirely-enthused reviews I've seen of Down With Love is here, from the viewpoint of someone who seems to know what they're talking about.

Well, he's a filmmaker, so the filmmaking perspective is understandable.

Also, I thought the colour thing was weird, but on rewatching the movie there is a lot of black and grey in there. Still, it's used as contrast, so I don't see it as *such* a big deal.

Down With Love was AWESOME -- especially with David Hyde Pierce playing Tony Randel, but even MORE when Tony Randel showed up.

I own that movie on DVD. Down with Love is one of the smartest movies made in a while. I love how Rene's character manipulated Ewan's character and worked him so well. Not to mention seeing Rene and Ewan sing is always a pleasure.

I LOVED that movie. I own it, and I adore the send-up to the Doris Day/Rock Hudson split-screen genre. I thought it was fabulously camp, even if Renee was scarily anorexic. I can't imagine why people are so against it.

My sister just gave me the DVD yesterday, it was the only movie on my wishlist. I thought it was perfect.
