Cobb County's moronic creationism stickers-on-textbooks have been nixed by the courts.

Yeah, for all the steps backward, every once in a while, there's a step forward, too.

I'm especially impressed by the reasoning behind the decision -- that the School Board should not appear to be taking sides, even in linguistic matters.

That's a very fine distinction and I'm glad that it was made.

Thanks for posting this.

Ieeee! The stats are terrible though, if based solely on the article: 5 parents want to get rid of the stickers, 2000 complained to get them on there.

Reference this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ellyssian/16699.html), that (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ellyssian/15470.html), or the other thing (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ellyssian/11732.html) for some of my recent thoughts on the matter. =)

For the record, my wife doesn't "believe" in evolution. Apparently it wasn't something she was taught in school, so it's just a hunch or a guess. Oi.

Good. Now can we all stop using theory as a synonym for hunch?

You know, if I had a child that brought home a textbook that would have had one of those stickers on it then I would insist that they amend the sticker to say, "just as creationism is also a theory and not a fact."

I'm just glad that there appears to be the occasional step forward in this country.

Judge Clarence Cooper ruled that labeling evolution a "theory" played on the popular definition of the word as a "hunch" and could confuse students.

THANK YOU JUDGE COOPER FOR KNOWING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. We who speak English thank you.

Now if only some one would come and teach that language to the school board in Oklahoma, where we deal with the same issues......
