Sci-fi readers make bad lovers?

[A guy reading The Da Vinci Code] is going to be awful in bed. This is just one step up from a sci-fi reader, someone who thinks sex can't measure up to masturbation.

Before you get too angry, remember two things: First, the guy's an editorial assistant at Nerve, which is the literary job equivalent of shoveling the shit out of the elephant cage, but without the dignity (and it smells worse -- we're talking being around Nerve employees all day). Second, he looks like this.

In other words, his life truly sucks. Pity him.

It's an emergency measure. Because they eventually look in the mirror, say, "I'm a forty-year-old virgin and I work at Nerve," and hang themselves. Making them wear ties saves a lot of money that would normally be wasted by employees hanging themselves with company-owned extension cords (which almost always ruins the cord).

I'm going to stick with Cryptonomicon on that one. I found it to be overall a superior work on all levels, plot, characters, storytelling, history, etc.

But then, Eco's Foucault's Pendulum spoiled me for any one else writing about the Grail. Or any of dozens of other topics as well :)

And yes, I also enjoyed Foucault's Pendulum but Cryptonomicon felt like it kind of moved a little faster. Which is odd for a book with pages in the four digits...

Quite true, quite true. There were a lot of places Foucault's didn't actually move at all. It is the single densest novel I've ever read. Eco packed so much in there that I always find new things when I reread it, even after a dozen or so times.
