<--- Just got my own copy of "Settlers of Catan" - mind you, in the circles where I game there is only one Rule.

1a.) If [livejournal.com profile] dagibbs is playing, then screw him over (boycott trades etc)
1b.) If [livejournal.com profile] foms is playing, then try to make things difficult for him.
1c.) If both [livejournal.com profile] foms & [livejournal.com profile] dagibbs are playing, then you are doomed to come in second place at best, but feel free to try to thwart them anyway.

Fuck Ya! Settlers is a great game, and causes the worse to come out in people, almost worst than Risk!

Settlers...one of my all time favorite games. It doesn't QUITE have the "screw your buddy" factor as some of the good railroad games, but it's still has good screwing potential.

The worst I've ever seen like that was a game of Roborally where my son got so far behind that he took it upon himself to try and take out the frontrunner at all times instead of going to the flags. He almost won the game doing it.

Roborally is a great game (although God knows, Wizards probably screwed up the new release) of robots racing to different flags around a factory floor with different obstacles and weapons. The key to the game is your "programming" your robot. At first, you are dealt nine programming cards of which you use five to program the next five moves. For every point of damage you take, you get one less programming card.

You can either race for the flags or anticipate your opponents moves and program your robot to do things like push them over the edge of a platform.

There is a lot of strategy and quite a bit of luck in the dealing of the cards, but it all usually degenerates into a lot of laughing and occassional swearing.

Wizards of the Coast is either coming out with or has recently come out with an updated version. I have no idea if they've changed the rules or components. The original had nice pewter robots, they very well may have gone to plastic knowing their Hasbro roots now.

There's also a nice on-line version at http://www.eyeplaygames.com/.

I'm not familiar with Settlers, but the strip reminds me of the idiot time I agreed to a two-night game of a "Buck Rogers" board game in college, got knocked out of the game on the first round and spent the next two nights either screwing the guy playing Mars as much as possible or talking on the phone.

as for bringing out the worst in people,
nothing comes close to DIPLOMACY.
I've seen good friends near tears over deals gone sour.
much better to play by e-mail. :)
So why do I have two copies of the damn thing?

When we play up here, [livejournal.com profile] pheromone always wins. And she’s always sure for the first half of the game that she’s losing. On Saturday, four of us played three games in a row, and she won all three of them.

But mostly this is just an opportunity to use my Settlers userpic. :-)

Been there, done that. If you can't win, the next best thing is playing kingmaker... (As opposed to quitting the game and finding other folks to play Kingmaker with ;-) )
