Monday morning post
Apr. 4th, 2005 08:20 amI'm working from home, since it's Elayna's spring break. Which means access to good coffee all day, which means I'll be more productive after one hour than I normally am in an entire day. Alas, my connection sucks -- I've got a bad feeling that my wireless card is starting to develop issues. Feels like I'm on dial-up. Ick.
Things posted over the weekend that you might have missed:
Fox's campaign to make folks aware of Arrested Development (which only has two episodes left this season).
Amazon selling a bunch of TV box sets (including Boomtown and The Dead Zone) for dirt-cheap
Things accomplished this weekend: After finishing Gaudeamus, which was wonderful, I read Sean Stewart's latest, Perfect Circle, which was even better. The fact that this was on neither the Hugo nor the Stoker ballot says a hell of a lot more about the awards than it does about this book. Stewart is one of the best writers around, with a uniquely regional Texas voice that tells a fascinating tale of personal growth in the form of a love story. Stewart is a guy who deserves a shitload more recognition that he's gotten.
I also finally watched the History Channel's Conquest of America. Well, 3/4 of it, as Tivo failed to change channels properly for the Southwest portion of it. This was truly nifty, and something you all should watch if it's rerun. In the tradition of their Pompeii special, it combines documentary elements with scripted scenes, telling the stories of Henry Hudson's explorations, the battle over Florida and Fort Caroline by the French and Spanish, the fatal exploration of the Northwest by Bering and the Russian/Spanish issues that arose from it, and Coronado's search for the Golden City. The three I saw were all incredibly engrossing -- both well-written and informative. Alas, the DVD isn't due out until this fall. It's worth getting.
Other than that, we watched the usual Sunday TV fare (including that completely unexpected opening of Desperate Houswives), went shopping, and had a nice relaxing weekend.
