Apr. 5th, 2005 08:53 amI'm currently reading The Toy Collector, by James Gunn. Gunn, as some of you know, wrote the screenplays for The Specials and the remake of Dawn of the Dead, and is thus very high on my list of favorite contemporary screenwriters. Many of you are probably more familiar with his brother Sean, who plays Kirk on Gilmore Girls.
(Rumor has it, incidentally, that Joss named a certain character after the two brothers, and there are other ties to the Whedonverse, including the fact that Slither, the movie Gunn's writing and directing now, stars Nate Fillion)
This is, as far as I know, Gunn's only novel. So far, it's damned entertaining, telling the story of hospital orderlies who end up selling drugs to fund their addiction to collecting '70s toys (the main character is obsessed with robots, and the other one is obsessed with ABC shows like Happy Days). In other words, folks just like you or me. :-)
Elsewhere, I pity the fool that doesn't check out this comic.
Proof that our child is becoming a little Otaku: Her birth-grandmom gave her a copy of Angelic Layer Vol. 1 on DVD that arrived yesterday. Elayna looked at it, noticed that the character design on the cover wasn't as sharp as in the comics, and declared that Mokona Apapa couldn't have had anything to with it. That was because she'd devoured the little CLAMP infocomics at the back of the Magic Knight Rayearth books. I, on the other hand, couldn't have named a single member of CLAMP if you put a gun to my head.
Come to think of it, I think that Miyazaki is the only director she can name. :-)
Sports-wise, my Mets proved that they'll still find ways to lose. At least Pedro and Carlos had solid debuts. With this bullpen, though, we need to build twelve-run leads to have a chance.
Finally, folks, remember that if you like what you saw at SMRT-TV.com, there are forums there. Feel free to provide feedback!
