Last night, Elayna ran in to tell me that she'd completed her first ever PS2 game -- she beat Shrek 2! Granted, we're not talking about the world's hardest game here, but she did it without any help at all (and since we don't let her get more than 1/2 an hour a day unless she reads to earn time, she hasn't exactly had the chance to just veg out and focus on the game like some people (like, oh, yours truly) might do).

Of course, she didn't get every single snapshot or coin, but she still did damned well.

And tonight, her school band is playing for the PTA.

Other fun Thursday things:

Finally watched this week's Deadwood. Damn, what a fine show.

Speaking of fine, I adore Ted Rall's latest cartoon.

Over in Kingdom of Loathing, I finally hit level 15! Woohoo! And I've opened 47 Lucky Surprise Eggs (gotten four uncommons, including the meat car), which means another trophy soon! Haven't been playing a whole lot, given lack of time, but I've been trying to spend at least a little time on the airship.

Last night's Lost: The Journey blew chunks. It was the worst sort of recap show -- one that provided nothing new for long-time viewers, and not nearly enough for people unfamiliar with the show.

Finally, more movie trailer goodness:

High Tension, which looks quite nifty, and Land of the Dead, because, well, Romero and zombies!

Of course, High Tension had the bejesus cut out of it to get an R rating. Uncut (and undubbed) import discs abound, though. I've seen it, and it's a really fun slasher throwback right up until a certain moment, after which point it becomes one of the most annoying movies ever.

'Hmm. I might have to hunt down the bootleg, then.'

Your best bet, if you have an all-region all-code player (which really aren't all that expensive these days! I think you can get the one I have for about $100), is the uncut UK disc that has audio commentary by the director and star.

'I'm assuming that the annoyances weren't cut out of the film nearly as much as the gore, sex, and other stuff.'

Actually, having done some looking into it, the differences in gore are mostly subtle, although abbreviated very noticeably in a couple of instances. I don't think there's any sex — not with a living person, anyway. (Heh. You've heard about that scene, no doubt.) And the only way they could cut the annoying bit out of the film is to lop off the last reel. It's one of those endings that some people will say 'Brilliant!' and others will say 'Gimme a fucking break!' Up until then, though, it's 1983 again and you're a kid surreptitiously watching a slasher flick on cable and praying your parents don't catch you.

'(Although, wouldn't it be cool if the MPAA actually made films NC-17 because, "man, this sucks"?)'

MTS-17.

Thank you, re: Lost! What the fuck, yo? And what was with the Moviefone guy voiceovers? "What if you were on a plane? What if it crashed? What if you were pregnant and got kidnapped by Tom Cruise's ugly cousin? What if you were followed around by an annoying voiceover?" ARGH!

I'm pretty sure the first video game I ever beat was Super Mario 64 when I was 18. I didn't have any video game consoles when I was growing up, except for and Atari 2600 when I was, like, five, and I'm pretty sure I never beat any of those games.

So tell Elayna congratulations for me! I remember exactly how it felt. And no one was around to celebrate with me... they were all at class.

I wish I could get back into gaming more. Maybe with the next Zelda.

"Over in Kingdom of Loathing, I finally hit level 15!"

*grin* I just hit 9. Or was it 10? *ponder* Well, either way, I hit one of em! I get so addicted to that game, but know I am missing tons of aspects to it and just wander randomly, killing stuff. It is so fun though! *bounce* And joining a clan was the best move ever. Mine has so many awesome things going on. :)

The meat car is no longer discardable (and maybe no longer tradeable?), so be careful you don't end up with a stack of the damn things.

I guess there's always the Untinker.
