Snow Day links.
Jan. 14th, 2008 09:10 amIt's a snow day, both for my workplace and for Elayna's school. Of course, both only made the decision this morning (as opposed to the schools in Belmont, Cambridge, Somerville, Waltham, and Newton, all of which had announced closings before we headed to bed), so no sleeping in. *grumble* I swear, I think that Lexington is the only other town in this part of the state that waited until the morning.
1. Google Calculator supports the Potrzebie system!
2. My dislike for Clay Aiken continues to grow.
3. Two free and fun games: Passage, which is more an experiment than an actual game (but which I find fascinating), and Ballistic Wars, which is an addictive mix of Advance Wars and pool (although I'm stuck on level fourteen of the latter).
4. If your dad is a chemistry professor, asking "why" can be dangerous.
5. Blu-Ray wins, but anyone who bought into Blu-Ray already might be screwed. Lovely.
6. For anyone who insists that the New Hampshire results are skewed based on folks lying to pollsters about supporting a black man (the Bradley Effect), Electoral Vote suggests it ain't so, as Obama finished with almost exactly what he polled with (although the Bradley Effect also covers statistically large numbers of undecideds swinging for one candidate, as well).
7. "I mean, MY knee jerk reaction, every time I see Ryan Seacrest, for instance, is to wish him a forced march off to a collective farm/reeducation camp." Have I mentioned that I love Tony Bourdain's blog?
8. M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel are now making a full album together!
9. Panic at the Disco: Now 100% exclamation-point free.
10. Broken Lizard's precipitous drop in quality (Club Dread being about a third as good as Super Troopers, and Beerfest being about a third as good as Club Dread) looks to continue next year with The Slammin' Salmon.
11. Finally, the state of Yendiopolis:We could use a wee bit of transportation help and industry We just need folks to visit, now.

Date: 2008-01-14 02:13 pm (UTC)Our school district does the same thing...they wait until the last minute, and sometimes the closing will come across as we're getting ready to leave for the bus. Its so frustrating, that sometimes if I'm pretty sure that its going to be too bad for them to go, I'll just make the decision myself to keep the kids home anyway.

Date: 2008-01-14 02:59 pm (UTC)And even if your dad isn't a Chem Prof. My parents decided well before I was born (I'm the youngest of 7) that all "why" questions would be answered accurately to the best of their ability. In fact, I believe all questions were answered correctly... In any case, I distinctly remember being in Jr High science class with the teacher lecturing about the refraction of light through water molecules in the atmosphere causing the sky to appear blue --and realizing I already knew that because I'd heard it before in my father's voice. The nifty thing was, even though the explanations often left us dazed & confused they always sounded plausible, so we would accept the answer and move on.

Date: 2008-01-14 03:06 pm (UTC)i'm ambivalent about the zooey album. on the one hand she has a gorgeous voice and i love her old-fashioned sensibility...but, on the other hand, i have a somewhat irrational dislike of m. ward, based on his collaboration with conor orifice and his contributions to the hottest state soundtrack. at least the tracks that leaked have been good...

I know nothing about Hottest State, other than you couldn't pay me enough to see it. Unless the payment was "Ethan Hawke never writing another book or screenplay again."

Date: 2008-01-14 07:17 pm (UTC)Wow, never thought I'd type that sentence. Anyway as a long time D&D playing, larping, working the renn faire dork I love me some Monty Python. I was thrilled to death when the musical came out and eagerly awaited the soundtracks arrival to our house. Then I listened to it.
Now it's entirely possible by not seeing it live I'm missing something but I didn't like it. My hubby and my kids love it to death. Nothing like seeing my 5 year old singing about being not quite dead, but it just left me flat. Which was very surprising considering I can basically perform the entire original movie for anyone at a moment's notice. I guess it's a media translation thing. There's not alot of movies to plays that I love (in that vein don't even get me started on what happened to my beloved Hairspray).
