Assholes world renown
Sep. 29th, 2009 02:40 pm[Warning: This post will contain a lot of profanity, and has the potential to be triggery, as I'll be discussing rapist and occasional filmmaker Roman Polanski*]
One things that's amazing about the arrest of child rapist Polanski is how many people in this world are just plain assholes.
Here's one of CNN's article about it.
Let's take a look at two of the tools quoted here.
First, there's professional turd-swallower and French culture and communications minister Frederic Mitterrand, who "wants to remind everyone that Roman Polanski benefits from great general esteem" and has "exceptional artistic creation and human qualities."
Yes, folks, toad-fucker and goat-felcher Mitterand believes that it's perfectly fucking okay to rape a thirteen-year-old girl if you're brilliant artist. Because, you know, that's the price of fame.
Later, Mitterrand tells us that French President Nicolas Sarkozy "shares his hope for a rapid resolution to the situation which would allow Roman Polanski to rejoin his family as quickly as possible." I'll give Sarkozy the benefit of the doubt and assume that Mitterand is libeling him here.
Mitterrand finishes up by telling us that he "greatly regrets that Mr. Polanski has had yet another difficulty added to an already turbulent existence." Yeah, because, you know, bad shit happening makes it okay to rape a child. And this is a difficulty that was "added?" As in, brought out by an external source? Like someone went up to poor, innocent Polanski and just arrested him for no reason at all? Seriously, if Mitterrand even has a moral compass, it's shoved too far up his nether oriface to even be visible.
Then there's Polanski hanger-on and Penthouse photographer Otto Weisser, who in that same article calls raping a child "one little mistake."
Really.
This scumsucker of an alleged human being is equating child rape with a shoplifting charge.
It gets worse.
There's a petition of assholes wanting -- no, demanding -- that Polanksi be freed, as if he's some sort of political prisoner. The fucktard parade includes Woody Allen (whose own skeevishness, of course, is legendary), Darren Aronofsky, Alexandre Arcady, Stephen Frears, Buck Henry, Wong Kar Waï, John Landis, David Lynch, Julian Schnabel, Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, Terry Gilliam, and more.
Which goes to show that talent is in no way grounded in morality, or even in humanity..
There are frequently discussions -- especially in the sci-fi communities -- about how to balance real-world obnoxiousness on the part of a creator with the desire to read/listen to/watch something impressive. Everyone, of course, has their own line. This one's well past mine. The folks listed above are incredibly talented (as is Polanski himself, of course). There are, however, always, even in a world loosely governed by Sturgeon's Law, going to be more talented creators and creations than there is ever time to see (or read, or listen to).
None of this, of course, takes away the feelings I experienced when first viewing Chinatown (shown in a high school class before I knew anything about the director), Annie Hall, The Wrestler, or Kentucky Fried Movie. But there are better ways to spend what little money I have than on supporting complete and utter scum like these people.
OBdisclaimer: No I'm not "boycotting" anyone. That's an organized action designed to have an impact. I'm simply noting that these people crossed a line that's unacceptable to me.
*Yes, when you rape someone, that is what defines you from that day forward. Anything else you do is secondary.

Date: 2009-09-29 06:47 pm (UTC)Except the victim herself really wants this to go away, and actually petitioned the courts earlier this year to drop the charges so that she wouldn't have to deal with it anymore.
Except that leads us back to my first point...

Date: 2009-09-29 07:12 pm (UTC)Possibly. I’m not necessarily concerned with the positive or negative effects of this project so long as there is some effect on people’s lives. I’ve merely set up a situation where there is potential to impact people in meaningful ways. Maybe I won’t be able to rape everyone who crawls through the tunnel, but the door is open for all kinds of scenarios; rape, serious injury, maybe even death. I might even get arrested."
In other words, "I don't care what effect it has on anyone else, I want my fifteen minutes of fame."
Gah. This guy needs a guided tour of San Quentin by the general population inmates.

Date: 2009-09-29 07:04 pm (UTC)One small word in defense of Polanski (although I shouldn't say anything I know), it was statuatory rape. And if he had done it in Nebraska it wouldn't even have been that (yeah I looked up age of consent across the 50 states once. Sue me.) The fact that legally, a girl that's aged 13 is not allowed to give consent for sex doesn't mean that it was the same as if he forced her.
And the victim is one of the people that thinks he should be released. Again, you can't retroactively give consent for what your 13 year old self will get into.
I know that if Sigourney Weaver had raped me in that way when I was 13, I would not have complained or pressed charges. I would have been most grateful.
Of course, statuatory rape laws serve a purpose and even though they get abused (like that football player who went to jail for rape because he had consensual sex with his 16 year old girlfriend when he was 18 - on camera sadly) they shouldn't be minimized. Myspace creeps need to have boundaries.

Date: 2009-09-29 07:06 pm (UTC)And the victim, understandably, is tired after thirty fucking years of being in the spotlight (something caused by Polanski's actions).

Date: 2009-09-29 07:42 pm (UTC)I'm pretty upset about Tilda Swinton and Terry Gilliam appearing on that list, incidentally.
I see CKD has the Smoking Gun link--which anybody who argues that it was statutory but consenting should read.
The whole thing pisses me off.

Date: 2009-09-29 07:52 pm (UTC)But one of the things that allowed Polanski to act like a "political prisoner" was the judge in the original case colluding with the prosecutor to throw out his plea bargain. That's when he bolted.
Polanski should be given a real trial, as opposed to that judge's entering a guilty plea in absentia. Then he should go to prison.
I wish we could have also prosecuted that judge for extreme judicial misconduct. Then I believe that most of Polanski's defenders could evaporate.
At least, I'd like to believe that.
Unfortunately, the judge is already dead.

Date: 2009-09-29 07:57 pm (UTC)When I said, "I refuse to defend Polanksi", I should have immediately followed it with the phrase, "...but I may defend some of his defenders."
(When I said, "that's when he bolted", I meant "that's when Polanski became a fugitive". That may have been clear, but it may not have.)
When I said, "most of Polanski's defenders could evaporate", I meant that the judicial system would not be seen as a victimizer, and thus Polanski would lose any and all sympathy he may have in some circles.
And in case there was any lack of clarity, I want Polanski serving real prison time in a real prison for what he did.
MY two cents
Date: 2009-09-29 09:02 pm (UTC)To drag it out this long is really sickening.
If it wasn't so rich bastard they would have dragged his ass back the very next day he jumped bail.

Date: 2009-09-30 01:07 am (UTC)that being said, i do have problems with extraditing foreign citizens the way the united states does and it does bother me that no one is going to be talking about that aspect instead of just talking about this one particular case and the particulars of the individuals involved.

Date: 2009-09-30 01:10 am (UTC)As for the law itself, I won't even begin to pretend I've got a grasp on the system, but I haven't seen much (from actual legal experts from any country other than France) implying that what happened here was in any way extraordinary.

Date: 2009-09-30 06:07 am (UTC)so in a similar vein, morons are uniting with polanski cause they know him as a decent guy and (most likely) didnt actually read the petition. Not knowing him, he's clearly a terrible person, but Luc Besson is one of the few smart celebrities out there. He said, "I do not know the history of the process. (...) I feel a lot of affection for [Polanski], he's a man I really like and I know him a bit, our daughters are very good friends but there is a justice, [and] it is the same for everyone." The signers want to stand by a friend, but there's really no good way to stand by a person who's been convicted of rape.
personally, fuck polanski, that was a pretty unforgivable crime. and Rush Hour 3 was a waste of my two hours. (Has not seen anything else he's done)

Date: 2009-09-30 10:40 am (UTC)However, taking advantage of the privileges available to acclaimed artists in order to evade the consequences of a nasty and violent crime for over thirty years is in no way an exercise of justice, which is why you're totally right about the rest of it. This is one of those cases where the self-appointed elite of society rub it in that they really do, no kidding, believe that they're more entitled than the rest of us.
