So our CSA provided us with a pair of large turnips. My instincts when dealing with a turnip are either A) carve it into a radio as a tribute to a true '80s classic, or B) fling it at a creature in Super Mario Bros. 2. Neither of those really involve cooking or eating.

Yes, I can google stuff, but anyone have any favorite culinary things to do with a turnip?

I've been roasting veggies a lot, and turnips roast just fine. Cut turnips, potatoes, beets, asparagus, cauliflower, carrots, parnips, onions, or what you will into same-size chunks, coat with olive oil, rosemary and balsamic (or what you will), and roast at 400 for 1/2 hour in a shallow pan.

Seconding the carrots. And/or sweet potatoes, if you like 'em. And a bit of brown sugar never hurts. (For some reason, I have this idea that you ([livejournal.com profile] yendi) don't like 'em though.)

Now see, I immediately thought of Blackadder II's episode "Beer". They had turnips in that episode too. :)

Funny word, luck..

Yes! Boil and mash (with or without potatoes added) and serve like, well, mashed potatoes or turnips. You can also roast them with sea salt and pepper and anything else you might like.

Yay starch!

Boiled, mashed, with lots of delicious irish butter and a little shredded sharp cheddar. Heavy on the salt and pepper. MMMMM.

Irish boiled dinner. I have a cabbage I could donate for it from our CSA, but you folks are too far away. (The children have told me that serving this more than twice a year is too much!)

My favorite way to eat turnips is raw. The outter layer/skin is spicy and yum, then the rest of it the inside is sweet and juicy. Not quite as sweet as an apple, but quite yummy anyway.

Mashed turnips with lots of butter and a bit of thyme. Delish!

They also go very nicely with lamb stew or borscht or everything really. Mmm, turnips.

Lamb curry. With the turnips peeled and chunked up into it, simmered till tender.

Or pretty much everything anyone above has said. All good.

Cut them into chunks, slather them with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, roast. Yum.

Also, mashed 50/50 with cauliflower.

I only eat them raw - I can't abide turnips in any cooked fashion, though I've only ever had them my grandmother's way - boiled to death. I sort of have a wish to try them sliced very thinly and bake them like potato chips, but I'm wary enough that I doubt I'll get around to it.

I actually use them instead of potatoes as the starch in stews & soups. Cut them into appropriate sized cubes and put them into the recipes where you would add the potato. They'll absorb the flavor of the stock & herbs and are almost indistinguishable.

The only vegetable I dislike more than turnips are rutabagas, so I'll share with you this recipe:
  1. Take a small wooden board, coat with olive oil and season with your choice of spices.

  2. Cut turnips into halves and place on board.

  3. Bake in oven until slightly soft.

  4. Remove from oven. Throw away turnips. Eat the board.
