Sometimes it's hard to be a Mets fan
Jul. 31st, 2004 06:04 pmWell, usually, in fact. I mean, one great year every decade or two just keeps hope alive. I know it's not as bad as being a Red Sox fan (trading Nomar? What the fuck?), or a Cubs fan (getting Nomar? What the fuck?). But still.
Trading for Kris Benson and Victor Zembrano is just a bad idea.
Benson is a damned fine pitcher. But he's a free agent, and we just traded one damned underrated everyday player and two prospects for him. If he signs long-term, it's about an even-up trade. If he doesn't, it's one wasted rental. At best, he's the #3 starter for the Mets. More likely, he's the #4. You don't trade Ty Wiggington and two prospects for that.
But that's nothing compared to Zembrano. Zembrano is a fifth starter for anyone. He's never shown himself capable of greatness, even during Tampa Bay's streak earlier this year. And we gave up our best prospect for him.
On the plus side, no more Erickson and Seo in the rotation, but losing Ty is a blow, and it'd take a miracle for this to help us into the postseason.
